What should I use to clean my polished terrazzo floors?

Terrazzo floors that have been restored must be treated like a polished marble floor. Dust mop terrazzo floors frequently using a clean non-treated dry dust mop. Sand, dirt and grit do the most damage to natural stone surfaces due to their abrasiveness.

Refinished terrazzo floors should be mopped with a NEUTRAL CLEANER ONLY using a clean mop that is only used for the polished terrazzo. Neutral cleaners for polished marble (which is how the terrazzo should be treated) can be found at your local janitorial supply store or from our company. Follow the cleaner’s dilution directions and change the water frequently. Vinegar and acidic cleaners such as the Zep Terrazzo Cleaner found at Home Depot should NOT be used on polished terrazzo floors as they will etch the terrazzo removing the polish.

How much does terrazzo restoration cost?

The general cost of terrazzo restoration is between $4 – $6 per square foot. Many factors that determine the cost include the amount of square footage, furniture to move, nails to cut, cracks to repair and especially the amount of holes or pitting to repair.

There is carpet covering my terrazzo floors. Should I remove the wooden tack strips and nails?

Homeowners can remove the carpet but should NOT remove the carpet tack strip nails. Pulling the nails out will cause costly hole repairs which can be avoided by allowing a stone care specialist to cut the nails.

What is the maintenance procedure for polished terrazzo floors?

One of the greatest benefits of terrazzo restoration is the maintenance. Unlike the initial refinishing, maintenance re-polishing is done only in high traffic areas at a fraction of the cost of restoration. Proper maintenance by a stone professional is the most important part of keeping your floor looking its best and protecting the investment of your initial restoration.

What can be done about stains in my terrazzo floors?

No stone specialist with any experience will guarantee stain removal but there is a “poultice” that can be applied to attempt to lighten/remove the stain. A poultice is the combination of a very absorbent material (it must be more absorbent than the stone) mixed with a chemical, which is determined by the type of stain to be removed. The concept is to draw the stain out of the stone. The chemical will attack the stain inside the stone, and the absorbent agent will pull them both out together.
